Restaurant “Trošt” Vrsar: A bit more passion, please

I have heard a lot of good words for Trošt that is widely considered as the best restaurant in Vrsar. It is situated in local marina (map here), with a large terrase that offers a stunning view to the port of Vrsar and to Sv. Juraj, a cute small island just accross. One saturday afternoon, just before Easter, we went there for a light lunch. We have chosen a sunny table on terrase, and started to relax. Inside, there is a large area decorated in a sort of Istrian rustic style, a bit too kitchy and fake for my taste. A large fireplace made of stone in traditional way catched my attention. The waiter told us they use it also for preparation of meat and fish barbecue.
Ambient 8.5/10
A friendly and kind waiter promptly served us and we ordered two salads to start with and a liter of house white wine – Istarska Malvasia from Arman. It was fresh and fruity with medium-to-low body, nothing exceptional but a decent everyday wine. The olive oil for salad was of mediocre quality, while bread was of purely industrial taste.
Details 6/10

Funghi and prosciutto green pasta
Green pasta with champignons and prosciutto contained good prosciutto, but all in all the dish was fairly boring. My main objection is that the pasta was not homemade and this is absolutely essential for a restaurant that tends to be upper class. Instead, they opted for some industrial pasta of pale taste that makes you wonder what the hell is making it green? The spinach? Hmmm…?

Polenta with squid in sauce
Squids in umido with polenta is a traditional Istrian dish that has obvious influences of venetian cuisine. The squid cooked with white wine and tomato sauce gives a sort of fish goulash that is served with steamy polenta. Here, the squid was of nice texture and the sauce was tasty but nothing spectacular. Portion was abundant even for two persons.
Score 7/10

Frutti di mare risotto
Seafood risotto was surely the best dish we have tried that afternoon. With a nice creamy consistence and rice cooked al dente, this risotto was clearly made using a good fish stock. I appreciated a lot addition of fennel leaves that gave to risotto a nice aromatic touch. Too bad they did not put some shrimps, clams and mussels inside! Like this it was more like Squid risotto.
Score 8.5/10

Total cost was 270 kn (36 eur) for three persons, with wine, sparkling water and two salads. The best part of this restaurant was a very kind and patient waiter who made us lough more than once. The food was tasty but a bit of creativity and passion in the kitchen would not hurt.

Overall 7.5/10
