2007 Damjanić “Clemente” – red blend: The rise of great Istrian reds

My dear Istrian winemakers, why do you constantly push only your Malvasias when they all more or less taste the same, when, instead, you can produce world class red wines with character? Fresh stainless steel Teran from Geržinić, black-pepperish Syrah from Trapan, ripe fruity Merlot from Roxanich, elegant and powerful Gran Teran from Coronica, tender Teran from Piquentum, Brombonero and Ottocento from Clai both already with cult status – these are all stylistically very different red wines that surely won’t bore you. This exciting club would not be complete without Damjanić’s Clemente, a blend of Teran, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dragi moji istarski vinari, zašto toliko forsirate malvaziju koja vam je svima više manje ista kada možete raditi svjetska crna vina s karakterom? Svježi teran u inoksu od Geržinića, papreni syrah od Trapana, zrelo-voćni merlot od Roxanicha, elegantan i moćan Gran Teran od Coronice, nježan teran od Piquentuma, već sada kultni Bombonero i Ottocento od Claia, sve su to stilski različita crna vina s kojima nema šanse da vam bude dosadno. To uzbudljivo društvo ne bi bilo potpuno bez Damjanićevog Clementea, kupaže terana, merlota i cabernet sauvignona.

Ruby red with violet overtones, thin like pinot noir, limpid, partly consistent to consistent.
Rubin crvena sa ljubičastim odsjajima, tanko poput crnog pinota, bistro, djelomično gusto do gusto.

At first fruity, sour cherry, plum and black, dense blueberry. The aroma is so juicy that is hard to stop sniffing. Medium intense. After a while comes hummus (sottobosco), black pepper with some etheric nuances.
Na prvi nos voćno, višnja, šljiva i crna, gusta borovnica, miris je sočan da ne možeš odvojiti nos. Delomično intenzivno. Onda iz pozadine probije humus (sottobosco), crni papar te nešto eteričnih, medicinskih nijansi.

In the mouth is dry, medium warm, the wood is completely incorporated (bravo! The winemakers are becoming more aware that the purpose of wood is not to aromatize the wine, but it’s what barrel is made from). Beautiful acids are abundant and the equilibrium is perfect. Tannins are soft and slightly coat the mouth with a tasty film (I adore this pleasant tactile feeling in the mouth). Abundance of polyalcohols makes the wine round and soft, it moves in the mouth like velvet. Medium body, and even better it does not have more structure. Here the winemaker didn’t want to make a muscled rough guy with undigestible tannins and green vegetable aromas, two properties that are often found in Istrian reds.
U ustima suho, djelomično toplo, drvo potpuno uklopljeno (svaka čast! Sve se više shvaća da nije drvo tu da dade aromu vino, već da je to tek građevni materijal bačve). Lijepih kiselina ne fali i ravnoteža je savršena. Tanini su mekani i lagano presvuku usta ukusnom patinom (volim taj taktilni osjećaj u ustima koji prija) a zbog viših alkohola okus je okrugao i mekan, vino se kreće u ustima poput baršuna. Srednjeg tijela, i bolje da nije strukturiranije. Ovdje vinar nije htio napraviti mišićavog grubijana sa neprobavljivim taninima i zelenim vegetalnim aromama, tako čestim karakteristikama istarskih crnih vina.

Medium persistent to persistent. Harmonic, the mouth nicely follow the nose. When it opens up you start to perceive graphite and shoe leather. In the finish minerality triumphs, the closure is clean.
Srednje trajno do trajno. Harmonično, okus tako lijepo prati arome. Kad se malo otvori dolazi grafit i koža od novih cipela. U finišu mineralnost dolazi do izražaja, zatvara se čisto.

This wine offers enjoyable drinking because of its fruitiness, it is unpretentious and of simple vocabulary that everybody understands and I am sure even white wine drinkers will love it. We drank it with tagliatelle with venison goulasch, the pairing was exceptional!
Ovo vino se sa užitkom pije zbog njegovo voćnog okusa, nepretenciozno je i jednostavnog rječnika kojeg svatko razumije pa će ga voljeti i oni koji preferiraju bijela vina. Mi smo ga pili uz tagliatelle sa šugom od srnetine, sljubljivanje je bilo – sjedi pet 🙂
