Konoba “Furia” Sv. Mauro, Momjan: Homemade, delicious ossocollo and good meat dishes

Momjan is a small village settled among green hills of northern Istria. Here, on these steep slopes indigenous grape variety Momjanski muškat (Muscat of Momjan) have found its perfect habitat and gives birth to a complex dessert muscat wine whose minerality and freshness will surprise you.

Konoba “Furia” is settled on a hill just above Momjan, in tiny village Sv. Mauro. The interior is very basic and rustic, it looks like an old mountain cabin. If you visit Furia during the summer choose a table on the terrace with stunning view on nearby vineyards and Savudrija bay on the horizon.

Start with charcuterie and cheese, you won’t be disappointed, actually you should come here only for this cold starters. We ate fantastic ossocollo that was melting in our mouths! It was made in traditional way by owner’s friend that lives nearby. Red wine we ordered was excellent, it was refošk from nearby Prelac winery (only 80 kn!).

Then we took some pasta. It is praiseworthy that both fuži and pljukanci were homemade, but the sauces were nothing worth of remembering. The first sauce, a kind of chicken goulash served with fuži (45 kn), was thickened with starch and had a faint taste.

Pljukanci served with a lot of grated black truffles (85 kn) were much better, but the problem was the undefined creamy sauce beneath the pasta. It would be better the cook didn’t exercise his creativity here. Grate me some truffles over paste, add butter and olive oil and I’m happy.

Tenderloin steak (95 kn) was first-class cut of beef but it was prepared inadequately. There was no crispy crust and it was too humid inside but I liked the pairing with cherry sauce. Roastbeef with mushrooms (70 kn) was not bad but had boring, canteen-like taste. The sauce was thickened with too much starch.

Conclusion? At Furia, there is no doubt, they use top quality ingredients of local provenance. It is worth to come here only to try their excellent charcuterie and drink good and honestly priced wine. On the other hand, Furia’s chef has to put a bit more love in the dishes he cooks and technically improve his cooking techniques.
