2009 Gerzinic Syrah

I really don’t understand why Syrah has arrived in Istria (and Croatia in general) only in the last ten years when it can give such great results in this land of red soil and moderately warm Mediterranean climate. Thanks to two young winemakers, Trapan and Geržinić, we can finally enjoy in these beautiful red wines with juicy fruits and black pepper. While Trapan’s syrah “Shuluq” is a meaty, complex and demanding wine ideal for the end of the evening with some game meat or cigars, Geržinić’s Syrah, made exclusively in stainless-steel, is more enjoyable for general public: simple and jovial, more floral than fruity, a perfect wine to start the evening.

In the glass it is purple red and of medium consistency.

The nose is of medium intensity dominated by floral notes (cyclamen, violets), then red fruits come to the surface (cherries, blueberries), while finale is reserved for wet humus and some subtle smoky notes.

In the mouth it changes, the fruitiness becomes more pronounced with delicious earthy flavors, graphite and leather now appear and you can feel them also in the nose, pleasant bitterness similar to cacao comes at the end. Medium-bodied with nice freshness and minerality that rocks! Serve it slightly chilled (15-16 C) and enjoy it even in the summer. Very enjoyable even if you drink it without food, for aperitif with some simple snacks or with more elaborate food like grilled sardines, barbecue meat, light cheeses, rabbit or chicken stew (in umido)…
